This Young House ran a three-part series on ways to save money.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
And new life as new wife added her five ways to "save it."
Both of these ladies had some great ideas I'm going to use.
However, here's one of my favorite no one has ever talked about…it's about saving bucks buying groceries.
I loved using this process especially when I'm saving for something special, like vacation, or to purchase something extra special, or when I used to be broke at times.
Here's what I'd do.
I'd pull out every piece of "food item" from every pantry space and set it out on the kitchen counter or dining room table. Generally, they were stored in more than one cabinet.
I'd organize the items into meal plans.
Next, I'd review the refrigerator and freezer items. I'd make a quick list of what's in there or just add the item to the individualized meal plans I was creating.
I'd place a single plan on scrape paper and set it on top of the group, adding in any refrigerator or freezer ingredients I already had.
Then, I'd add any missing items needed to complete the meal.
Continuing…I'd go through and add a day of the week for the meal, skipping the days I wouldn't be home…Monday, this one on Tuesday, etc.
Generally, I'd continue up to the time more money would be arriving – like payday and leave the rest to the next "Tour de cabinets."
Another way would be to stop when the meal groups possibilities end.
Even when I didn't need to do this for some particular purpose, I'd like doing this. This seemed to transition how I looked at my grocery shopping experience. I seemed to think in groups when I was shopping.
When I first did this, many years back, I found I had three weeks of meals planned and my shopping list for that three weeks cost me less than $20 to complete. This experience is a great eye opener and perspective changer. I'm absolutely positive this has saved me thousands of dollars over the years, if not more.
Even though money has changed for me now, I still like to do this a few times a year. It cleans out the cabinet and brings me back for a good reality check.
To me this is putting the cart before the horse.
Happy cabinet shopping!
