I was just reading my PR colleague Jeff Crilley's newsletter. As always, I found it very informative. Here's a quote from it:
"How to Impress the Press
Journalists are under a lot of pressure these days. By now, you've all heard about cutbacks in the new business. Even the large media companies that are still making money are cutting back because of the loss of advertising dollars. Newsrooms have become very lean.
What does this mean to you?
---It means reporters have less time to develop stories. Be a resource.
---It means that deadline pressures are more intense. Don't be a pest. (I disagree)
---It means that smart PR-minded people can shine. Pitch great stories.
---It means that relationship-building is more important than ever. Gone are the days when the news media had time to confirm a story from 3 different sources.
In a nutshell, if you approach reporters with respect and get to know their needs, you can become a trusted source. And over time, you won't have to call the media, the media will be calling you."
Jeff is an award winning TV journalist whose gone solo now with his own company. I recommend getting on his email list. He makes his video look like anyone can do it. It's so nontechie yet the information is so helpful.
