A friend of mine, Tom Martin, reminded me of a quote today in his newsletter. TomMartinMedia.com
"I remember the last time everybody was talking about being in a recession. At my company, we held a meeting to discuss it. We took a vote, and it was unanimous. We decided that we just weren't going to participate in the recession. There was no simply no doubt about it. And we didn't!"
-- Zig Ziglar
Tom has been in the fields of network news production and public relations for more than 25 years. He appeared on my radio show and helped thousands of listeners during that time to uncover new meaning to public relations. Tom worked with Jim Rohn marketing his book, The Seasons of Life. Of course, besides so many other great speakers and authors.
I'm sending you this quote today to ask you, "How are you playing a part in this recession?"
A strange question for sure and you may be wondering why I asking it.
Either you're contributing to the situation or you're not. It's that simple.
Of course, you're saying, "I'm not contributing to it, look at xxx, xxx, they did it."
And, "Yes, you'd be right." But only somewhat right.
In my CPA days, I watched people buy houses that were too large, too expensive, for them. Many were two people living in a five-bedroom house. They purchased the house with no money down -- that was the game back in those days. Now they are crying "wolf." They are wooing all over the place because their "house" isn't as valuable any more. Just because Wall Street screwed you. Nope. You have responsibility too. It's time to recognize how you've contributed to where we are today. And it's time for awareness of how you're still contributing to it today.
But all this is the past. It's spilled milk. But each of us still need to take responsibility for the bed we sleep in today.
Today is what we need to think of. How are we contributing to the recession today? Are talking about it in such a way it continues the spread of its negative energy? Or are we doing something about it every day to stop the spread of this cancer. Yes, it is a cancer. It begins with a mindset. Are you angry of what they did? Maybe you're angry with yourself for your part. Okay, time to let go. That's all the past again.
What are you doing today? Zig Ziglar and his quote (above) is a reminder this isn't the first time we've been here. We'd like to think it would be the last though. But it probably won't be.
Do you watch the news and adopt the position of whatever they are telling you?
Have you stopped spending?
Did you lose your job and are wallowing in the loss?
Maybe you're job is on its way out and you know you need to start looking, redoing your resume, etc. but you haven't -- aren't you contributing. Hope doesn't pay the bills.
Change. That's how Obama was elected. We all want it but the majority of us don't make changes in our own thinking, our own way of doing things. Change is an easy word to say. And we all believe we are changing. Which has some partial truth to it, we always are. But is the change making a difference in the recession. We'd like to believe it is.
I'm writing this not to preach from a pulpit. I too struggle with this every day.
I'm writing this because, as a coach, I believe change doesn't need to be as hard as we make it. But it does take teamwork. It takes you and me to find a way to connect and make something better than we can make by ourself. This, I believe is what we need to focus on. What we need to buckle down and figure out what it is today that we can do. One ripple in a big pond still makes a ripple.
Think on this. Don't soak up the negative vibrations. In the end, you too may take Zig Ziglar's route by taking a vote, and deciding that you're not going to participate in the recession. This also means we need to take action today, tomorrow, and every day after that support the change in some way it's going to make a difference.
If you don't know what this action is…start asking. Attraction will also give you an answer. But not until you ask. Not until your vibrations to accept change as a good thing and not connect change with fear, will it begin to happen.
Begin wherever you can. Your GLOW will be felt. Every ripple counts.
Promise.
